New Business Checklist

North St. Paul is a diverse and proud community that is always eager to support local businesses. While we are a suberb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, we strive to preserve the small-town atmosphere our residents enjoy.
As a new business in town, there may be some necessary next steps for you to complete
Licensing
We require licensing for some business types. Those businesses include:
- Body Art
- Cigarette & Tobacco
- Gasoline Distribution
- Fireworks Manufacturer and Sales
- Liquor Sales
- Massage Enterprise and Practitioner
- Peddler Solicitor Sales
- Pawn Shop

Permits
Some permits may be required to get started on construction work or to receive a Certificate of Occupancy. Permits may include:
- Building (remodeling, attaching a new external sign, etc.)
- Electrical
- Fire Alarm Sprinkler
- Mechanical (replacing or installing HVAC systems, ventilation, etc.)
- Plumbing
- Sign (adding or replacing an external sign)

Zoning
Contact the Community Development department at nspcd@northstpaul.org or 651.747.2407 to ensure the location is properly zoned for your business.

Business Association
We encourage all new businesses to join the North St. Paul Business Association. They are committed to providing community charitable support, networking opportunities and general business promotion. Additional Information
Food service establishments should check with Ramsey County or MN Department of Agriculture for any licensing or inspection requirements.
Helpful licensing information can be found at MN Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) for new businesses.
