Volunteer Opportunities

The City of North St. Paul offers many volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Explore these options and help us continue to make North St. Paul an "extraordinary" place to live.

Fall Round-Up Parade 

The Fall Round-Up is a long-standing North St. Paul tradition. The Parade Committee is in need of volunteers to help with

  • Poster Distribution
  • Morning Line-Up Prep
  • Announcers Packet preparation
  • Parade Participant Safety Enforcement
  • Car/Driver Volunteers

The parade is held on the third Thursday in September each year. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the City of North St. Paul at 651-747-2400.

North St. Paul Food Shelf 

The North St. Paul Area Food Shelf is a non-profit organization serving families living in North St. Paul and Oakdale. Volunteers are needed for the following: 

  • Phone Operator: Ability to communicate with clients to make appointments. The daily shift is from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on various days. 
  • Retail pickup; volunteer is needed to pick up donations from various retail establishments. Requires approximately 1 ½ hours for a given pickup. Having a truck or trailer would help with this position. 
  • Accepting and sorting food donations. 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the selected day. 
  • Individual to assist with data processing functions. Assist with managing software and maintaining web page.

North St. Paul Green

North St. Paul Green is a group of amateur gardeners who work together to beautify downtown North St. Paul by caring for the gardens on the main street. They meet approximately once a week in the summer depending on the weather. If you’re interested in digging in with us contact the City of North St. Paul at 651-747-2562.

North St. Paul Historical Society 

The historical society promotes awareness of North history for residents and visitors through education, interpretation, presentation and preservation. The museum is staffed on Saturdays and Fridays for visitors and also welcomes school and other groups for special tours. 

Educational programs are presented on the 4th Tuesday of most months. There are opportunities for volunteers including:

  • decorating
  • assisting in setting up displays
  • computer work
  • research work
  • assisting with refreshments when there is a general program
  • greeting  visitors when the museum is open 
  • and many other opportunities

North St. Paul Lions 

The North St. Paul Lions meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 39 2678 7th Ave North St. Paul. Contact them at NStPaulLions@comcast.net for the latest volunteer opportunities.

North St. Paul Reserve Officer 

The Reserve Officers serve the community in many ways including:

  • transporting prisoners
  • crime scene security
  • park and traffic control
  • assisting motorists
  • assisting with community events
  • conducting house checks. 

The Reserves receive annual training in defensive tactics and attend monthly meetings and training in various subjects. They are required to volunteer 18 hours per month. North St. Paul Rotary

Rotary is an organization of business and professional men and women united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. North St. Paul Toy Shelf 

The North St. Paul Toy Shelf collects toys for children in need. If you are interested in volunteering contact Norma Worm at (651) 308-9961  or Dawn Peterson at (651) 777-7693 or visit their website thetoyshelffree.org. If you would like to donate new or gently used toys, these locations have drop boxes:

  • The Toy Shelf Inc. - 2393 Margaret St. 
  • North St. Paul City Hall - 2400 Margaret Street 
  • Oakdale City Hall - 1584 Hadley Avenue 
  • Oakdale Discovery Center - 4444 Hadley Avenue

Park and Recreation Events

The Parks and Recreation Commission hosts a variety of community events throughout the year from Egg Hunts to Summer Concerts. The Commission welcomes volunteers to help to organize and host the events throughout the year. If you are interested, please contact the City of North St. Paul at 651-747-2400.

Ramsey County Library

Southwood Nature Preserve Taskforce

In the south-east corner of North St. Paul, along Holloway Avenue, are 28 acres of nature preserve, that is maintained by the City and the Southwood Nature Preserve Taskforce. The preserve has trails where visitors can walk through various ecosystems including

  • emergent shoreline
  • wet meadow 
  • mesic prairie
  • savanna
  • upland prairie
  • oak forest
  • basswood forest
  • cottonwood/silver maple flood plain

The Southwood Nature Preserve Taskforce is always looking for volunteers to help with maintaining the preserve and to help at their annual Prairie Days event.  If you are interested in volunteering at Southwood Nature Preserve contact Cathy Troendle (612) 236-5046 or troendlecathy@q.com

Veterans Park

North St. Paul Veterans Park, located at 2460 Margaret Street and Highway 36 is a joint effort of the American Legion Post 39, VFW Post 1350, North High Air Force JROTC and the City of North St. Paul. The North St. Paul Veteran’s Park Committee worked together to create a beautiful public space to give tribute to veterans and their loved ones.
