Annual Flushing
Hydrants and watermains are flushed annually beginning in late April and lasting for several weeks. Staff from the North St. Paul Fire Department flushes hydrants throughout the city between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Flushing of the fire hydrants ensures their reliability and dislodges & removes particle build-up from the watermain, and allows staff to inspect them and make any necessary repairs.
During this process:
- The water is SAFE to drink.
- If water is temporarily discolored, do not use for washing - especially white clothes. If you notice discoloration of your laundry after washing DO NOT put them in the dryer. After clearing your line, re-wash your laundry, this will usually remove any discoloration.
- To help clear discolored water, open all COLD water taps for 15-30 minutes or until the water runs clear.
